What the results mean
| Result | What it means | How common |
|---|---|---|
| Working | The site loads and shows real content | 72.5% |
| Broken | An error, or no response at all | 7.7% |
| Parked or empty | A holding page with nothing on it | 7.5% |
| Insecure | Loads, but not over HTTPS | 4.1% |
| Not found | The domain does not resolve | 3.8% |
| Social only | A profile you do not own | 1.3% |
Why a broken site is worse than no site
Someone with no website gets judged on their Google listing, their reviews and their photos, which for a good trade is often enough. Someone with a broken link looks closed. The second is also costing money every year in renewals while returning nothing.
Sites break quietly. A host lapses, a certificate expires, a plugin update fails, and nobody tells the owner, because the people who hit it just leave. That is why the broken group is twice the size of the group who never built one.
Questions
Is this website checker free?
Yes, completely. No sign up, no email address, nothing stored. It runs the same check we ran across 10,862 London businesses for our research.
What does it actually check?
Whether the domain resolves, whether the site responds, whether it responds over a secure connection, and whether what comes back is real content or a holding page. It follows redirects and reports where you actually end up.
My site says broken but it works for me.
That is the most useful result this tool gives. Sites commonly work from a device that has them cached while failing for a first-time visitor. It can also mean the site is slower than six seconds, which a real customer would not wait for either.
Does it tell me if my site is any good?
No, and it does not pretend to. It checks whether a site loads, not whether it wins work. A perfectly working website can still be the wrong website.
